All My Children Synopsis for Tuesday May 7, 2013

Bianca discusses the incident that happened to Miranda at the coffee shop with Adam. Bianca agrees with what Miranda said – it's all Bianca's fault.

AJ wakes Miranda, who would rather stay hidden away from the world in bed. AJ tries to be supportive, knowing she is dreading facing the kids at school.

Pete introduces his friend Dillon Wilder – the best coder in the west, to Jane, the owner of the coffee shop. Dillon tries to get the scoop on what Pete's been up to in the romance department. Dillon recounts how Pete has hooked up with thirty-sometings in the past.

Brooke visits Celia at Celia's room and admires the several bouquets of flowers Pete sent her. Celia is upbeat despite the early hour. Celia glances in the mirror and is distracted – likely recalling the image of the man she saw in the mirror the previous day. Celia confides in Brooke that she is dating Pete and she's happy and nothing is going to ruin it.

Cassandra's captor, Vlad is about to beat Cassandra some more when he hears someone approaching. Vlad's boss, a well dressed and groomed man threatens Vlad – if he touches the merchandise again, he will be a dead man.
Jessie and Zach work together in trying to determine where the Russian mob could be holding Cassandra.

Bianca thanks AJ for sticking up for Miranda last night, then decides to go see Miranda. Adam walks in and tells AJ that AJ's school Principal, Mr Larkin, called to suspend AJ from school. Adam marvels at AJ's spirit when AJ storms out. When Bianca steps into the room, Miranda breaks down and apologizes for last night.

Dr. Joe finds Dixie asleep by JR's side, she spent another night there. Joe asks Dixie if she's heard anything from Tad. She says that she hasn't but it was expected. Tad had warned her he would be incommunicado until his assignment is over. Joe tells Dixie she can call him and Ruth at any time.

Bianca comforts Miranda, commiserating over how difficult it is during your teen years. Miranda tells her mother that she hates herself. Bianca recounts some of the more difficult situations she has been in, like being on the cover of an international tabloid – “Erica Kane's daughter is gay!” and she was being blackmailed at the time. Bianca tells Miranda she's strong, but Miranda begs her mother to transfer her to Bramwell or home school her or anything – just don't send her back.

Pete is still having coffee with Dillon when he notices Celia outside. He sets up another date for later that night with her.

In JR's hospital room, Adam tells him that he's going on an extended trip and he has left Brooke in charge of Chandler Enterprises. He would have made the same decision regardless of whether JR was in a coma or not. Dixie walks in on Adam laying into JR “Adam Chandler Jr. - a drunk, a failure in business and in life – one of the biggest disappointments in Adam's life...” - Dixie cuts him off.

This is your son, this is your flesh and blood.” Dixie understands her son has hurt a lot of people, but he had a lot to overcome – including being Adam's son. Dixie asks “can't you find it in his heart to show his own son a little kindness?”

Pete goes back inside the coffee shop and Dillon teases Pete about going for a younger type of girl than he used to. Dillon continues without himself or Pete realizing that Celia has come in the coffee shop and is behind them. Dillon observes how timid Celia seems to be – Pete could use any line and Celia would never have heard it before. Pete states he doesn't need to use lines. “Dont tell me you already sealed the deal. I knew you were fast but this is a record even for you.” “So whats the plan, you take the V-card and give her another ride or two before moving on to the next one?” Pete interrupts “Enough Dillon,” Celia slips out unnoticed without hearing Pete continue “You're way off base. I really like this girl. There's something about her. Something special – I have never met another girl like her in my life.”

Jessie meets with the mother of a girl who went missing a few months prior, hoping to find a clue to lead him to Cassandra. Later, Zach explains to Jessie that they need to move fast. Within days these criminals begin feeding them booze, drugs, whatever they can to get control over them before they're shipped anywhere in the world.

Vlad's boss goes in to see Cassandra and seems to win her over with his more gentle approach – He apologizes for Vlad. He states that they need to trust each other as he removes the handcuffs that bind her to the bed. She states she just wants to go home. The man tells her that she would shock her loved ones if they saw her with the bruises she has sustained from Vlad's beatings. He offers her a pain killer and she takes it timidly.

AJ announces to Miranda that he's suspended. AJ is not pleased when he hears that Miranda is thinking of transferring to Bramwell. AJ muses that he's not going to look good in a plaid skirt and white socks. People will start to talk.  Miranda hugs him and states how much she loves AJ.

Dixie lectures Adam, reminding him that JR was a victim that night too. And now David is out and she caught him in JR's room with his hands on JR's neck. Adam worries that David might target AJ next. Dixie asks Adam - “This is your pride and joy. Cant you just tell him you miss him and want him to come back to us?”

Pete wonders at the fact that he's been stood up. Celia throws the bouquets of flowers in the trash, wondering how she could have been so dumb. Her phone rings – Pete is calling.

Vlad's boss displays his displeasure with Vlad – now they will need to allow the bruises to heal before sending her away. He hands Vlad the pain killers and states - “You know what to do. Once we get her hooked, she'll stop fighting and do whatever we want her to.” In her bed, Cassandra begins to see blurry.

Adam announces that he loves AJ, and he always will. Dixie hugs Adam and thanks him, then walks him out. In his sleep, AJ says the word - “Dad.”

AMC Monday 5-6-2013

I'm so excited after having watched today's All My Children.  Just one short week ago, the show premiered online after a two year hiatus.  Today's episode knocked one out of the ball park.  I haven't been this impressed with an episode of All My Children in years.  This is the storytelling I fell in love with back in the early 80's.  All of the acting was exceptional.  The scene between Miranda and AJ felt genuine, not cringe-worthy the way teen stories can sometimes come across.  I was very impressed with Denyse Tontz's emotional scenes today.   Ms. Tontz is proving herself worthy of representing a Kane woman.

Here's a synopsis of today's show:

Jessie pushed Zack for details about the Russian mafia that have kidnapped Cassandra.  Zach explained that these guys do not mess around -  they mean business. Fear shows on Jessie's face - he realizes he is running out of time to find Cassandra before he has to tell Angie that Cassandra is missing.

Angie spoke with Cara to inform her that David is back in town.  Cara wondered at Angie's ability to forgive David, but expressed that she is unwilling to do so.  Angie urged Cara to speak with David in order to give him closure about the loss of his child.  Later, Cara takes a phone call and explains that as much as it breaks her heart to do so, she has to stay in Pine Valley right now.

Bianca stumbles upon Zach and the two catch up.  It's clear that Zach is not over Kendall and he states he wishes he could have been the one to make Kendall happy.

Miranda finds a bench, sits down and cries while AJ tussles with Hunter.  The coffee shop owner, Jane, finds a smart phone and realizes Hunter's plot to humiliate Miranda online.  Jane threatens the teens in her shop - if anyone posts the video online, Jane will permanently ban them from the coffee shop, and notify the police of an attempt to corrupt a minor.

Miranda is still crying when AJ finds her.  AJ comforts Miranda, and even lightens the mood by reminding Miranda of a painful and humiliating situation AJ had gone through.  Miranda explains she is tired of hearing people talk behind her back and point fingers at her - the stigma attached to her mother's lesbianism is too much for Miranda.

Miranda goes back to AJ's place and decides to stay in his room overnight with AJ (as they have apparently done before).  Miranda rips apart the blouse she had been so excited to wear on her first date.  Inside the coffee shop, Jane reveals to Bianca what took place between Hunter and Miranda.  When Bianca shows up, AJ gives the two some space.

Bianca is shocked and hurt to find out Miranda's true feelings.  Miranda claims that Bianca is "In their face about how proud you are to be gay and they have to accept it.  ...Did you ever give a shit about all the people it was going to affect?"  Bianca, nearly in tears, excuses herself before either one of them says something they will regret.

Celia and Pete enjoy their first date together, even if Celia has been unable to relax since she snuck out of Bramwell Hall.  Celia reveals that her parents both died in a car accident when she was a child.  She has one picture of each she carries in her locket charms.  When she notices one of the locket charms is missing, Pete explains he found it and it is safe.  He will bring it to their second date.  Celia seems pleased that there will be a second date.

Zach meets with a young man who appears very frightened due to the questions Zach is asking.  The young man alludes to human trafficking, but is too afraid to reveal anything else.

Inside JR's hospital room, Dixie finds David with his hands around JR's neck.  David tries to explain that he saw JR move - and not an involuntary movement.  He was taking JR's pulse when Dixie walked in.  Dixie doesn't believe David and she screams for help.   Dixie phones Jessie and asks Jessie for help.  When Jessie explains he's tied up with something important, Dixie pressures Jessie, stating if Tad was there, Tad would want no one other than Jessie to handle this.

Jessie finds Dixie and David arguing in the hall at the hospital where he threatens to arrest David for parole violation.  Angie comes out of JR's room and asks for quiet so she can finish her exam.  When she finishes the exam, Angie promises that David will not go near JR again.  No one seems to understand why she has a soft spot for David but Angie reveals "We've all done things we wish we could go back and undo."  David asks Angie if she believes David was trying to harm JR, and she says no.  David explains that Angie's faith in him gives him hope for redemption.  Angie doesn't seem convinced.  David insists that JR's movement was not an involuntary reflex.

Alone in his hospital room, JR opens his eyes.

Unofficial primer to the New All My Children on Prospect Park

There's been a lot of buzz in the news the last several weeks about All My Children and One Life To Live - two soap operas canceled by ABC brought back to life by the new Online Production company Prospect Park.   Reviving All My Children and One Life To Live would not have happened without the tenacity of the fans who had dedicated a chunk of their week days every week of the year to watch their favorite soaps, - many of these fans had watched for decades.

The new shows premiered on April 29th in an online only format in the U.S. After the premier, I've read a couple of reviews panning the show for not making it easier for a new viewer to jump in and watch.   I can totally understand that sentiment, and it probably could have and should have been done.  The new producers are experimenting with an entirely new format of half hour shows (that's been done before) but telling stories at a faster pace than traditional soaps.  I think starting the series with an introduction to the show would have been counterproductive to the faster pace that the new show is striving to achieve.  They had a lot of loose ends to tie up from the cliff-hangar ending that ended the show's 41 year network run on ABC.

I promise it gets easier to follow if you stick with the show.  When I started watching one summer, my mother made me promise to wait until the commercials to ask questions.  Usually by the commercial, I had figured out what I was going to ask.  Stick with the show and you will start understanding the intricacies of the relationships of the residents of Pine Valley.  Keep in mind that soaps, in their effort to tell infinite stories, sometimes need to take liberties such as aging children in order to make them more viable elements in the stories. This explains the age discrepancy for Dixie (Cady McClain) and her son JR (Ryan Bittle).

Here's a quick (unofficial) primer of the current residents of Pine Valley:

The All My Children Book
From the very beginning, All My Children has featured a hand opening the familiar book.  To me it's symbolic of Agnes Nixon - the show's creator, inviting her close friends (all of us fans) over for story time. A weekday tradition we've been indulging in since January 5, 1970 when All My Children premiered.

Pine Valley was a sleepy little town in anywhere USA in its early years.  In the 80's it was established that Pine Valley is in Pennsylvania.  If my memory serves me correctly, Center city separates Pine Valley from Llanview (where Agnes Nixon's One Life To Live is set).

Eventually Pine Valley was internationally recognized for its high caliber of talent and business in Erica Kane (Susan Lucci), supermodel, turned business woman and founder of cosmetic company, Enchantment. Palmer Cortlandt founder of Cortlandt Electronics as well as Adam Chandler's Chandler Enterprises.

Erica Kane (Susan Lucci)
The Erica Kane, supermodel, business woman, mother. Erica has been on the show since day one.  Many woman saw Erica as a sort of role model.  If Erica can get through her difficulties, then surely I can get through mine.
When the show went off network TV, Susan Lucci found herself busy with many offers including Devious Maids, and Deadly Affairs.  Her fanbase is hopeful that Susan Lucci will soon return to the role that won her an Emmy.  Pine Valley is not the same without it's brightest jewel.

Opal Cortlandt (Jill Larson)
Always noticeable, Opal Cortlandt is a strong woman who finds herself alone in the huge mansion she dreamed of during her leaner youth.  Her beloved Palmer Cordlandt, founder of Cortlandt electronics and father of their (unexpected) son Peter Cortlandt passed away several years back. (RIP James Mitchell)
Tad Martin, (Michael E. Knight),
the birth son she put up for adoption to protect from the abusive father Billy Clyde Tuggle, is not in town anymore.  Opal finds herself reaching out to her youngest son Pete. (A true fan favorite, Michael E. Knight is not yet a cast member, but I personally feel confident he will be)

Adam Chandler (David Canary):

A highly successful business man, often seen as a villain, fiercely competitive with (now deceased) Palmer Cortlandt.  Both men grew up in Pigeon Hollow, West Virginia and had a rivalry extending back to their youth.

Years ago, Adam was desperate to have a male heir to his business empire. He had an affair with innocent Dixie Cooney who was a recent transplant from Pigeon Hollow at the time. Dixie  got pregnant and gave birth to Adam Chandler Junior - known as JR.  Adam intended to get rid of Dixie by having her committed and then raising his son with the love of his life, his wife Brooke.  Dixie's true love, Tad Martin stepped in and saved her from Adam's plot.  Over time, in the interest of their son, Dixie and Adam called a truce.  Brooke eventually forgave Dixie as well.

Adam has a twin brother, Stuart (also played by David Canary) who has a heart of gold.  Stuart usually has the ability to bring out the best in his brother Adam.  [You can usually tell Stuart from Adam because one of Stuart's collars is tucked into his sweater.]

Brooke English (Julia Barr):
Brooke has often been unlucky in love, but found true love in the one man with the strength to handle such an independent woman, Adam Chandler.

Brooke once had an affair with Tad Martin while Tad was married to Dixie Cooney, and Brooke and Tad had a son together.

Brooke has always had a rivalry with Erica Kane, which has led to some fan favorite scenes between Julia Barr and Susan Lucci throughout the years.

Dixie Cooney Martin (Cady McClain) and her son, (YES son) JR Chandler (Ryan Bittle)

Dixie Conney was completely innocent when she came to town.  She was seduced by powerful, wealthy, worldy, Adam Chandler in his scheme to father a male heir.  Their son JR (short for Junior - his name being Adam Chandler Junior) had a difficult time of adjusting to life's challenges.  At the end of the show's run on the old crappy network, JR had lost the woman he loved, lost custody of his son, and lost his business.  Insane with sadness (brilliantly played by previous actor Jacob Young), JR shot a gun into a crowded engagement party for Brooke and Adam.  The series ended with the cliff hangar - who did JR Shoot? (A nod to the famous Dallas cliff hangar "Who shot JR") [*** Spoiler in next paragraph***]

On Thursday, May 5th, 2013 after a 2 year wait, fans found out that JR shot Marissa Tasker, JR's former wife, and current love of Bianca Montgomery. Fans also found out that JR has been in a coma since  Dr. David Hayward shot him moments after he killed Marissa, who was David's daughter.

AJ Chandler (Eric Nelsen) is short for Adam Junior III.  The son of JR Chandler and Babe Carey.  As a result of a baby switching, AJ Chandler was a short time resident of Llanview known as Asa "Ace" Buchanan II (One Life To Live) while Miranda was being raised as JR and Babe's baby. (And poor Bianca refused to believe that her child had died) AJ and Miranda share a lifelong bond as well as the same birthday.

Miranda Montgomery (Denyse Tontz) is the granddaughter of the famous Erica Kane.  Starting with Erica's mother Mona, the Kane women have proven themselves to be empowered women who will not be kept down.  Erica made a name for herself with nothing but sheer determination and will power. When Erica sets her mind to something, nothing will get in her way.

Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel)

Erica had a daughter with one of her many husbands, Travis Montgomery.  The birth of her daughter Bianca was the only thing that seemed to refocus the self absorbed Erica into realizing that the earth does not revolve around her.  Suddenly it revolved around her beautiful daughter Bianca. Erica mellowed while raising Bianca - good thing too.  Bianca confessed to Erica that she is a lesbian.  Erica remained a loyal, loving mother to her daughter.

 Kendall (Alicia Minshew)
Erica has another daughter, Kendall (Alicia Minshew) who was the product of rape when Erica was a barely a teen. Kendell had been put up for adoption, and the self absorbed (or traumatized - or both) Erica went back to life as normal when she returned to Pine Valley - forgetting all about her first daughter until Kendall showed up in Pine Valley (played by Sarah Michelle Geller at the time)
Bianca too was raped, resulting in baby Miranda.  For a period of time Bianca struggled with whether or not she could love this constant memory of the violence perpetrated upon her. In the end, Bianca was able to deal with the painful remnants of the rape and lovingly raise her daughter Miranda.

Dr. David Hayward (Vincent Irizarry) is one of the longest lasting villains Pine Valley has ever seen.  To the world renown brilliant doctor the end justifies the means.  The evil doctor has long been an antagonist to the residents of Pine Valley.

Dr. Cara (Carolyn) Castillo (Lindsay Hartley) once an undocumented resident, Cara married Tad in an effort to remain in the country.  When Dixie returned to town, Tad divorced Cara to be with his true love.  Cara began a relationship with Dr. David shortly afterwards.

A fan favorite since the early 80's Jessie (Darnell Williams) and Angie (Debbie Morgan) Hubbard. Angie was a goodie two-shoes, and Jessie had a rough childhood on the streets before moving to Pine Valley to stay with his uncle Frank and Nancy Hubbard. Eventually they pushed aside their differences and admitted their feelings for each other.  Even death has not been able to keep these two apart.

Cassandra Foster (Sal Stowers) and Jane McIntyre (Heather Roop):
The character of Cassandra originated on the now defunct Agnes Nixon soap The City (originally called Loving). I'm light on the details for these two lovely additions but stay tuned to find out more.

Celia Fitzgerald (Jordan Lane Price) Celia is a newcomer to Pine Valley.  She is 18 yet is reliant on the patron who has funded her upbringing.  She's tired of living a sheltered life and is ready to experience life as an adult.

Pete Cortlandt (Robert Scott Wilson) was a surprise to his parents.  His mother Opal had believed herself to be passed menopause, and his father had believed to have been left sterile following a polo accident. Pete was born on Christmas eve and shortly afterwards, a DNA test proved that Pete was indeed Palmer's son. Eventually Pete was sent away to boarding school when he proved to be too much for his nannies, among them Kendall.  Pete once worked with Adam Chandler in an attempt to sabotage the company Fusion with Adam's ultimate goal being to seize control. Pete resided in Switzerland, then attended Stanford University until he dropped out to establish his own smartphone app company.

Crime fighter Lea Marquez (Paula Garces)
seems to be paired with Zach Slater (Thorsten Kaye).  Zach was with Kendall when the series finished its run on network TV, and it's since been revealed that Kendall took the kids and left Zach in an effort to protect the children from the unsavory element intertwined in Zach's casino's.

Dr. Joe Martin (Ray McDonnell) is the sole remaining original cast member.  Dr. Joe and his wife Ruth have provided normalcy and stability to Pine Valley since its beginnings.  They represent a wholesome down to earth, good natured middle-class family who have always been a mainstay in Pine Valley.

Evelyn Johnson (Francesca James) is a newcomer to Pine Valley.  She seems to want to protect Celia from something involving Celia's patron.  Interestingly enough, Francesca James has been involved with All My Children since its earliest days as well.  In the 70's she played a character Kitty who was killed off.  The audience outcry led the show to bring on Kitty's long lost twin sister Kelly.  For years, Francesca has helped to shape Pine Valley from behind the camera as well.

Give the show a chance and join in the tradition that has bridged generations of Americans.

What I love about the new All My Children

First of all, I love the fact that despite the odds, All My Children and One Life To Live are back.

I love the fact that so many of our favorites have made the transition and remained with the show.  Sure there are many others who I miss and hope will be back.  Some have contractual obligations they need to complete before they are eligible to return.  Some are simply too busy with other endeavors.  In time, I believe most of these actors will in fact be back on the show.  We need to have faith as fans.  Most of us were skeptical that our shows would be back at all, so keep the faith.

I like the fact that All My Children is, from my perspective, distancing itself from the ridiculous ending that aired on ABC.  The writers decided to pick up the action five years after the cliff hanger.  This was a good way to put a period of time that seperates the story telling from the old ludicrous stories that pushed fans away in droves, to the new stories that are being developed.

The overall look of the new All My Children is really nice.  The sets seem to be somewhat smaller than they were but they look great.  The camera work seems to mesh well with the stories so far.  One thing that got me excited was the location footage they shot as Pete Cortlandt drove back into Pine Valley.  I loved seeing the streets of Pine Valley.  I even saw a street sign for High School Lane - where I imagine Pine Valley High is located.

All My Children still has the feel of the show I feel in love with.  Sure things are different.  Some favorites are missing and the show is only a half an hour.  There's enough continuity that it feels familiar and comfortable. The new cast members fit their roles very well.  As they learn the demanding craft of working on a soap, they're sure to get even better.  I hope they have sense enough to learn everything they can from the veterans who have managed to maintain successful careers on soaps.

I LOVE that Prospect Park recognizes the genius of Agnes Nixon and brought her in to consult in order to make the transition and overall vision for the new All My Children even better than the original.

I love being able to watch All My Children whenever I want, wherever I want.  All My Children was the most recorded TV show in the United States for many years.  Fans have long wanted a way to keep up with the show even if it meant viewing at a different time than the shows aired.  Now the time they watch is up to each viewer.

Two years is a long time, and it seemed even longer at times - especially when I lost hope that my shows would be back.  Yes, this has been a very good week for me.  I finally feel that I can go back home - to Pine Valley where I intend to stay for many years to come.

All My Children and One Life To Live are back - Online

This week, All My Children and One Life To Live made their debuts on the Online Network.  AMC and OLTL are no longer being aired directly on the television - now they air on the Internet.  (The current exception is in Canada, the shows air on the cable channel FX)

Users with a computer with Internet access can watch All My Children/One Life To Live on Hulu.com for FREE.  As long as you watch on a PC, there is NO CHARGE for Hulu.com.

Some users prefer the luxury of being able to watch Hulu Plus on other devices such as on a tablet, or on their smart phone, or by using a device like Roku, stream it from the Internet directly to their TV.  The FREE version of Hulu does not stream to these devices so viewers have to pay the $7.99 a month for Hulu PLUS if they want to watch on a device other than their PC.

If you're a die hard fan, or you prefer the option to download and save episodes, you can purchase them from iTunes for 99 cents each or you can buy a package good for 20 shows for $10.

Viewers now have choices they never had when All My Children aired on network TV.
Viewers can now watch whenever they want.  These shows are no longer considered daytime TV, but now they are ANYTIME TV.

Shows will be available for 10 days on FREE Hulu.com
Shows will be available indefinately on the paid Hulu Plus service.
I am uncertain how long shows will be available for download from iTunes.
I personally am loving the freedom afforded from the shows being available online.

Prospect Park's All My Children - back and better than ever.

What a glorious week.  After two years of missing Pine Valley and most its residents, on Monday April 29th, I was finally able to return.

If you're a regular soap viewer, then you'll probably agree that the city in which a soap is set plays an important role to the overall feel of the show.  The city almost becomes a cast member.  After spending so much of my free time in Pine Valley, I found myself unable to return, and to my surprise, the emptiness did not fade over time.  Initially, I was very hopeful that the shows would find a new home on a different network or cable channel.  After the initial Prospect Park deal feel through, I lost hope.  I removed myself from several Facebook fan pages that were trying to do what seemed impossible and somehow convince a production company to revive the shows.

I decided that I would never have closure - that I would forever be wondering who JR shot.  I was reminded of a similar ending when the comedy Soap went off the air.  It ended with my favorite,  Jessica Tate, being fired upon by a firing squad.

Sad and hopeless, I made up the ending in my mind... I decided I had to face facts and remove hope that AMC would ever rise from the ashes...

Flashing back in my own mind to the costume ball where Tad put a plan in motion to save Dixie from Adam's plan of institutionalizing her, and to take baby JR away from Adam's clutches.  Baby JR was such a cute baby.  At the series finale, a very troubled JR shot a gun in a crowd.

In my mind, Erica Kane was shot and killed.  Pine Valley's brightest star was snuffed out.  All of the residents of Pine Valley were shaken to their core.  Even those who didnt get along with Erica were torn up.  Erica's business failed and unemployment climbed ever higher.  Little by little residents of Pine Valley started moving away - the city was no longer the same.  There were too many memories for most to be able to work through.  Erica had been an integral part of Pine Valley.  It had been Erica who had put Pine Valley on the map, and now with Erica gone the town slowly reverts back to the sleep town it had been before Erica became famous.

Thankfully, that ending was just a bad dream of things that could have been.  Thanks to Prospect Park, All My Children lives once again.

All My Children and One Life To Live actors keep the fans engaged

It has been said that there is no more loyal fan than a soap fan.  Apparently there is no more loyal actor than a soap actor. My reason for stating this is that so many actors from All My Children and One Life To Live have made themselves accessible to fans using the Internet.  My personal favorite (and secret crush) is Cady McClain - Dixie Martin from All My Children.  Man is she looking amazing!

Cady not only tweets regularly, she maintains a blog which she updates regularly (http://cadymcclain.com), she has an alter-ego Suzy F*cking Homemaker face book page, and posts videos on YouTube.  Another favorite of mine is Jill Larson who is also very active on Twitter.

Over the last few years, the Internet has redefined how the entertainment medium works and how fans consume entertainment.  Now my shows are released on the Internet rather than on broadcast or cable television.  Now I can stream Internet to my television thanks to my Roku, or I can watch on my cell phone using the pay service Hulu Plus, or I can watch the free Hulu and watch on my PC.  So many choices - all up to me and what works best for me.   Additionally, I can now communicate with my favorite actors on facebook and twitter. I cant tell you how excited it made me to be retweeted by Cady McClain herself!

In the weeks leading up to the much anticipated premier of All My Children and One Life To Live on April 29th, 2013, Prospect Park released photos of actors holding a sign with the number of days until the relaunch of both shows.  YouTube videos were released showing behind the scenes preparations for the two shows, showing off new sets, introducing us to some of the new actors.  We had an insight into the secret behind the scenes world.

I personally believe that those who rang the death knell for soaps did not have the vision to see that adjustments were necessary but that it was possible to breath new life into the soap medium by determining how to best connect with fans.  Prospect Park and the actors of All My Children and One Life To Live are doing an excellent job and I hope to see that continue.

All My Children and One Life To Live FINALLY return

May 3, 2013

What a week!  It seemed like April 29th took forever to get here. But this past Monday, the day finally arrived.  The day when the two 41+ year old shows All My Children and One Life To Live premiered on the Online Network, Hulu, Hulu Plus, iTunes, and in Canada on the FX Cable network.
Yes soaps have transitioned once again – bridging the gap from an entertainment medium in decline – television, to online.

My overall feeling is one of excitement and hope for the future of these two long- time favorite shows of mine.  I still cannot get over the sick feeling in my stomach brought on when Brian Frons – head of ABC daytime canceled these two shows.

According to published reports, ABC had mislead actors to believe that the efforts to reduce costs on AMC and OLTL had been going very well and that the shows were not in any immediate danger of being canceled. But soap slayer, Brian Frons went ahead and tried to kill another two soaps.  It was Frons after all who had been responsible for canceling the long running Search For Tomorrow on CBS many years earlier.

If you’re not a soap fan you probably cannot fully comprehend the emotions brought on when All My Children and One Life To Live were canceled.  To be perfectly honest here, I was taken aback by my own reaction when I heard the news.  I was in a state of shock which lead to depression.  I know how that sounds – getting depressed over a television show being canceled.  But consider the fact that these shows have been a part of my life in some way since I was a toddler.  My mother watched the shows from inception.  For years, my mother and sister would discuss the stories around me.  When I was 12 years old, home on Summer break, I started watching All My Children.

I watched faithfully for 15 years – recording the shows and watching at night after school or work.  All My Children provided distractions from stressful periods of time in my life, family illness, financial difficulties, death in the family, … Throughout it all, Erica Kane was right there with me.  When the two shows were canceled, I lost two entire cities of friends.  Many of whom I had spent more time with than my real life friends.

The ugliness is behind us now, thanks to the new online production company Prospect Park and the tenacious outcry of millions of fans– at least for the foreseeable future.  As long as the two shows have enough steady viewers, they will continue on.  As fans, we need to make sure we are watching both shows daily.  If viewership starts slipping, then the shows will face the same situation.

I still fantasize about kicking Brian Frons in the nuts, but I guess I should derive satisfaction in knowing he was canned from ABC around the time One Life To Live signed off of ABC for the last time.

As fans, we have been given a reprieve.  We've experienced life without our friends in Pine Valley or Llanview and we hated it.  Now its all up to us.  Support the shows we love or lose them again - likely for good this time.  Only we can make sure that does not happen.

Support All My Children and One Life To Live on Hulu, Hulu Plus, iTunes, and Canadian cable network FX.
